Chair is a piece of furniture comprising of legs, backrest and some with armrests. There are chairs that can sit one person, while others can hold more than one. The latter is more aptly referred to as a sofa.

As more and more newer designs come out, and the selection becoming more varied, it is good to back to the basics in choosing a chair. Consider the weight, size, stack ability, durability, maintenance and artistic design.

Chairs are matched according to use. They are made specifically for different purposes. The chairs seen at home are generally more relaxed and laid back. They usually come in varied colors and designs. On the other hand, chairs seen in the office are expected to be more formal, stiff and often in earth colors.

Chairs are greatly varied that it will be difficult to enumerate all of them. There are chairs used for a specific sport, or a specific place. But for starters, the more common types are the ones we see at home and at work.

One of these is a rocking chair. It is also called "rocker" because it moves back and forth to rock the user. It has two curved or arched bands of wood at the bottom, one attached on the two left legs and the other one is attached on the two right legs. The chair starts to rock back and forth when the user shifts weight or gently pushes the chair with his weight. It also rocks by itself when a user sits on it until the center of gravity is achieved hence giving the user a comfortable sitting position.

The hanging bubble chair was designed in 1968, a revolutionary hanging chair that turned the world of design upside down. It was an original creation of Eero Aarnio of Finland. This extraordinary chair hangs from the ceiling and is made of transparent acrylic and stainless or chrome steel. It can be hanged at any height and provided with six foot chain and snap hooks. It has removable cushions included and furnished with white or silver leather or other colored fabrics.

The modern bubble chair is very impressive with its special acoustic. It seems to absorb the sound to make the user feel isolated when seated on it. It shields the user from any external noise or disturbance. Eero Aarnio was among the first modern furniture designers to use plastic material in industrial design. Plastic is more flexible to design to different shapes and colors.

The ball chair is made up of fiberglass with lacquer coated steel base. It comes with a removable high-density foam cushions and high grade wool blend interior. It also provides a very pleasant isolated feeling. It is also sometimes called Globe Chair, designed using the simple geometric shape of a ball, yet providing a warm and quiet space to relax. The chair can be turned around on its base giving the user many different views of the outside world.

The meditation pod is a three-leaf chair placed at the center of the living room. It has a metal frame and padded in polyurethane foam. This chair can accommodate one to two persons. The Australian designer Steven Blaess is the brain behind this contemporary chair.

A sofa also called couch is one of the most common chairs. It can seat two to five persons, depending on how long the seating area is. It is often made out of different fabrics and designs to match the tone in your room. It can serve as a gathering place for families. Other times, it is alternately used as a bed also.
